1927 – 1997
The Story of Australia's Greatest Racing Chrysler
Today, car speed records are set by jet powered rockets on wheels – but in the 1920s, a stock model Chrysler raced around a dry claypan near Kalgoorlie in the Eastern Goldfields, to become the toast of Western Australia.
The extraordinary feats of this exception motor car are retold in the Souvenir Program published to mark the 70th anniversary of these outstanding records achieved at Lake Perkolilli on 18 August 1927.
Over 24 hours, Silver Wings smashed the speed record and the Australian 1000 mile record. All this was achieved in the trying conditions of a dry, dusting, red claypan lake miles from anywhere.
The Anniversary celebrations including the unveiling of a replica of the original record breaking vehicle that re- enacted the record attempt at Lake Perkolilli.
The Program captures the excitement of the original record attempt and demonstrates the outstanding achievements of these early motor racing daredevils.
